The Anointing, the most solemn and sacred part of the Service, takes place as the choir sings Handel’s ‘Zadok the priest’. The text of the anthem has always been a part of the English Coronation Rite, but most famously since it was set to music by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) for the Coronation of George II. As the anthem is sung, the Archbishop anoints The King.
In a special ceremony at The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the oil was consecrated by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III, and the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, The Most Reverend Hosam Naoum.
